Hi,
I have a catamaran with a 1997 Yamaha 9.9 (but not a PDQ). It has a significant crack in the upper casing, about 3" long, immediately below the latch for the top cowling.
I'm in the Marquesas, and the closer parts are in Tahiti, 1000 miles away. Since we use a diesel engine for most motoring and just use the Yamaha for coming into docks, the crack isn't critical to us right now. I was considering postponing replacement until Australia. I'd patch it with JB Weld as a temporary fix. Right now exhaust gases do come out of the crack.
Anybody have this problem before or have suggestions as to other fixes? I can email a picture if that helps.
Thanks and much appreciated.

Crack in upper casing
Re: Crack in upper casing
hi evan,
we had this exact problem 15 years ago. generally, it's cosmetic although if it gets bad enough you'll start to get exhaust coming out. we replaced the housing.
good luck,

Re: Crack in upper casing
Hey Evan,
I agree with Duetto. The crack should not cause any problem other than exhaust gas escaping. The JB Weld sounds like a good fix if you can get it to stick.
