problems on a mooring

Posted by Cindy on June 03, 2002 at 15:23:00:

We have a 32 and just went on our mooring and are finding that we have a big
problem. We are bridled to the mooring with the lines coming off the top of the
mooring ball. The problem is where we are there is alot of wind and a strong
current. The combination of both is spinning us in a circle and allowing the
mooring ball under the boat and the chain the mooring ball is attached to is
rubbing against the hull of the boat. I am concerned with damage to the hull and
I think the chain has taken out my speed transducer. I could use some help if
anyone has had this problem. The people who put the mooring in said the only
other thing we could do is put a sea anchor or drog off the back but, there is
no place in the center where one could be attached.

We had this problem in spades in Warderick Wells in the Exumas. When the wind
and current were in the same direction there was no problem, but when the wind
opposed the current (when the tide changed) we "sailed" towards the mooring ball
until the rode tightened, then "sailed" sideways until the buoy flipped under
the hull, hitting the bridgedeck hard (and noisily) then out under the other
hull....and so on

We found that a very tight (short) bridle to the mooring buoy, holding it
between the hulls obviated the problem

Hi. I'm not sure if this is a similar situation or not,but when I would anchor
in a tide against current, the boat would drift up and over the anchor rode. I
found that my dodger windows were causing me to "sail" forward and over-ride the
rode. Whenever I can,I now leave the windows open

Cindy,
We have used a small anchor sail set at three points on the topping lift or
backstay on our previous monohull. We haven't tried it on the PDQ yet, but I
don't see any reason it would not work. It only needs to be a flat sheet, and
works like an "air rudder".
