Yamaha 9.9 2012--choke linkage

A week ago I started having terrible starting problems on one engine. I was half way through pulling the carb for a cleaning (first time) when I realized that the little clip attaching the manual choke linkage had failed, allowing the link to fall off. Fortunately, you can work the choke manually without the linkage if the cover is off. Problem solved, but I did have to order the part.
I took the carb off and cleaned it anyway (2 bolts, 2 linkage clips, fuel line--easy on port, probably less fun on starboard). I was curious. I have treated all of the gas with Biobor EB, never drained the bowl, and never run it MT. I do have a silica gel vent filter. The carb bowl was shiny, no gum, no corrosion.
Just sharing.
