performance package

Post by pcjohnson »

I am interested in buying a new or fairly new Classic 36. The factory has a performance package with a tall rig, screecher, bowsprit and mylar sails. My sailing will be in the Caribbean for a few years prior to permanently in the Sea of Cortez. The latter is characterized often by fairly calm winds, and I thought that an improved light air capability might be advantageous. However, I would like to learn the opinions of current owners as to whether such a $16,000 option is worth it since the PDQ is already has good sailing qualities and an enhanced light air rig may be an overkill.

Highlander is a tall-rig Capella(Hull81,2000) with 780sq ft asym. spin but no sprit. Light air performance is significantly better than standard rig. If you plan to sail in less than 15knot winds you will really notice the differance. If I were buying today I would not hesitate to go tall rig. Sprit would be nice but not essential. Only drawback of tall rig is bridge in Ocheechobee canal.
